What To Consider When Investing In A Used Dump Truck

Posted on: 6 April 2018

If you're just launching a career in construction and you need to invest in a dump truck, you may find that brand new trucks are out of your budget. Instead, you might need to consider buying a used truck. Before you purchase the first used dump truck you see, it's important that you know what to look for in these units. Here are a few tips to help ensure that you're getting your money's worth when you purchase that first used dump truck.

Check The Frame And Axles

One of the first things that you should look at when you're researching used dump trucks is the condition of the frame and the axles. Check for any signs of bowing in the frame rails. If they're bowing upward, that's an indication that the truck may have been driven with a loaded, upright box on a regular basis. Bowing downward, on the other hand, may mean that the truck has been overloaded and its integrity has been compromised.

When you look at the axles, make sure that there is no rusting, corrosion, or other damage. The axle shafts should be intact and straight, like the frame rails. If the truck has push axles, that's a great tool for spreading the weight across the axles. It makes it easier to pass weight limitations and makes the truck easier to steer.

Inspect The Dump Body

Walk around the dump truck, looking for any signs of rust, dents, cracks, or other damage to the body. Make sure that the box liner and the dump bed are intact and in good shape. If you can find an aluminum dump bed, that's better for weight control and fuel regulation. However, steel bodies are more stable and secure.

Examine The Hydraulics

For dump trucks with a dump bed that operates on hydraulic cylinders, you should always make sure that you examine the cylinders before you make a purchase. There should be no corrosion, damage, or any leaks visible around the cylinders. They should move freely, with no binding, jerking, or other hesitations. Test the dump body several times to be sure that it functions as it should.

These are key components that are unique when you're looking at used dump trucks. You should also evaluate the engine condition and ensure that you have the maintenance records available for monitoring. Otherwise, you may end up with a truck that hasn't been properly cared for or one that doesn't operate the way that you need it to.
